Opus One is an 'expense account wine' found on wine lists around the world and sure to impress any client that you're entertaining. This extraordinary building is styled after an Incan temple, a white exterior submerged into green lawns surrounded by vines which are grown in the European method.
It was started in the 1970's by the Baron Von Rothschild and Robert Mondavi to combine European technology and California grapes. They produce about 25,000 cases yearly of one Bordeaux style red wine made from the five classic varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot.
You enter through the lobby where you sign in. Although tastings are by appointment, if it's slow day an instant appointment is possible. Tours are always by appointment, and the high-end tours are great. The video at the bottom of the page was done on the terrace.
The tasting is one generous pour, although they normally offer a choice of two vintages. They have a small, beautifully appointed tasting room, but if the weather is nice, and it usually is, go upstairs to the loggia which offers beautiful views of the valley.
